How to clean moss from outside areas

Moss has always been a challenge to get rid of. But there’s one EGO tool that can rid your outdoor areas of this stubborn plant once and for all.

How to clean moss from outside areas

Moss thrives in damp, shaded areas. A menace in a few areas, but a friend in most. The aim isn’t to eradicate moss entirely, just from the places it can cause a problem. Thankfully, the EGO Bristle Brush, perfect for tackling moss, allows you to be selective.

Lightweight and easy to operate, simply attach this tool to the Multi-Tool Power Head and away you go. Here’s how you should use it, along with a few basic household items to get your outdoor areas looking clean and moss-free.

Cleaning common mossy areas

The stiff bristle brush and paddle sweep can be interchanged and attached to the multi-tool power head to clear mossy outdoor areas like:

  • Garden decking
  • Patios
  • Concrete driveways
  • Flag walkways
  • Tarmac pathways

Brushing over the area with the power assisted bristle brush and paddle sweep might be enough to loosen and brush away moss. However, you might like a little help from these regular household items.

Boiling water

Boiling water is a low cost and environmentally friendly option for cleaning moss. Used with your hard bristle brush, this method works best on non-porous surfaces like flagged patios and walkways. To clean moss with a bristle brush and boiling water:

  1. Boil the kettle (and put extra water in for a cup of tea!)
  2. Pour over the mossy area and wait for a few minutes (with that cuppa)
  3. With the bristle brush attached to the multi-tool power head, scrub and sweep the moss away from you. We encourage you to put the moss into the garden beds or a compost heap as it makes excellent plant food
  4. Replacing the bristle brush with paddle sweep, sweep away the remaining wet areas to reveal the clean surface

Vinegar

Vinegar is a good everyday item that is ‘anti-moss’ due to its high acetic acid content. To make a vinegar solution to remove moss:

  1. Mix 500ml of vinegar with 35 grams of salt
  2. Stir until the salt is dissolved
  3. Dilute the mixture with one part vinegar and three parts water

Spray the vinegar solution onto the surface of the moss and leave it to do its thing for 15-20 minutes and then wash it away with clean water. Repeat the process daily for up to one week, or until all the moss has been fully washed away.

Finally, brush the clean area with a stiff bristle brush. This will remove the last of the debris and leave the outdoor area looking clean and moss-free.

Bicarbonate of soda

Bicarbonate of soda helps to remove moss by increasing the pH of where it's growing, making the area uninhabitable to moss. To remove moss with bicarbonate of soda and a stiff bristle brush, it’s easy and straightforward:

  1. Sprinkle the mossy area with bicarbonate of soda
  2. Leave the bicarbonate of soda for a few hours to absorb the moisture and attack the moss
  3. Simply sweep the moss away with ease using a bristle brush

The EGO Bristle Brush and Paddle Sweep - your ultimate moss-clearing dynamic duo!

The EGO Bristle Brush Multi Tool and Paddle Sweep attachments are the only tools you need for cleaning moss from outdoor areas. Both tools are powerful and lightweight, so they don’t cause strain when brushing for long periods of time.

Making short work of brushing away moss, wet leaves and ingrained dirt from paths, driveways and decking, the EGO bristle brush attaches to the EGO Cordless Multi-tool. It’s powered by a 56V ARC Lithium™ battery which delivers all the power you need to eliminate mossy spaces.

Coming with an adjustable tilling speed, which ranges from 210rpm on low to 240rpm on high, select the most appropriate speed depending on how mossy and dirty the area is.

It’s not just the power that makes this tool so effective at clearing moss and dirt. Each bristle of the bristle brush is 1.5mm thick and has an overall clearing swath of 560mm which throws the debris away from the user. Equipped with a plastic mud guard, you will remain dirt free, eliminating the need to scrub yourself down too!

Cleaning the bristle brush and paddle sweep
